Giving Feels Good.

I have had a crafts business for more than 20 years. One thing that I have always done is to try to give a little something extra with each order. During the holidays, I pick at least one customer, and give them their purchase for free...usually at crafts shows. When I have stock that I plan to discontinue, is slightly imperfect, or crafting materials that I won't use... I give it to a shelter, or an organization that I hope will put it to good use.

I give in intangible ways too. I am certainly not a rich person, but I decided long ago, after reading a book by Deepak Chopra that I would give a gift to everyone that I came into contact with, a compliment, a favor, paying something forward, or even just a smile with the words "have a nice day" even to someone that is not treating me nicely. I feel better in the long run.

The act of giving produces positive endorphins and a sense of well being. In short, giving feels good. You don’t have to have a lot to give a lot. You can give the gift of time by volunteering in your community, the gift of companionship to someone who needs support or a friend, or your gift can be a simple smile or compliment to a stranger. You never know what small gesture will help someone in need or make their day. There is always someone that can use your help, and giving to your community is a reward in itself.

We all have something to give. As a part of doing business, I believe that it creates good karma, and perhaps the recipient will pass something along that will make someone else have a good day. In any case, giving is a good thing...pass it on.

This is so true. I have read a few books on this and one that I found really amazing was one by the Dalai Lama and Howard C Culter. "The art of happiness".

I really love it when people follow this kind of philosophy. If everyone did it imagine what an amazing world we could create.

I love your blog. i'm so happy that I came and checked it out :)

I so agree with you and your post gave me chills, it is what I believe as well, just from my own experience of receiving the smallest compliment makes the whole difference of how a day goes, I also am a big believer in Karma and give of myself and donate every year to the homeless animals shelters with the money I make from my shops. I am so glad to hear that others share this idea of life is best when you give from the heart, not expecting anything in return.

What a lovely, lovely blog! And thank you for following mine!
I used to own a gift basket business and would often give away free baskets and other things to people that I thought were down on their luck, people who gave me especially good customer service or something like that and it felt great! They were always so shocked and appreciative! Your blog reminded me that I haven't done that in awhile, in fact not at all with my current business. Thanks for reminding me that giving is the ultimate gift.

Also just wished to mention that I'm trying out my 2nd blog giveaway...a pair of cute little earrings...if you're interested, like all giveaways there's no strings attached.
