Can You Hear Me Now?
I went to the flea market today, and as I was browsing, I saw this old rotary phone sitting on a table. It was already adapted for use with a regular outlet, and best of all...it worked! I took it home, cleaned it up and plugged it in. The first time that it rang, it dawned on me what a harsh, loud ring it had. Not a ring tone mind you, but the ringer that produces the one and only ring that the phone makes. Do you remember not having a choice of ring tones? The only time my kids had heard this kind of ring was when it was offered as an option on their cell phones...of course the opted for whatever pop artist was popular that week, or perhaps a quote from Family Guy or the latest movie. I watched as they took turns dialing their own cell phones and laughed as their fingers slipped out of the little holes, and they had to start all over. My daughter, now almost 19 made the observation that people really took time with each other..."back then" as she called it. Sheesh! I'm only 46! She noted that you actually had time to back out of a phone call because it took time to dial the number. She noted that you had to stay in one place to complete your call. You can't just pick up the phone, dial a friend as you run out to your car, and continue the conversation. I remember, that if you were talking to your boyfriend, or girlfriend...if you wanted privacy, you either made the call when everyone was asleep, or tried your best to hide in the bathroom or closet if you were lucky enough to have the cord reach that far! Of course, you were just a cord's length away from the taunts of your siblings, and yells of your parent's to "Get Off Of The Phone! I Need To Make A Call!" You were tying up the lines after all. No call waiting! I told my daughter...just think of the time people took with each other before phones, when they had to write a letter, and really think of what they would say before they said it...or better yet...when people had real conversations...face to face.
Can you hear me now?

I remember those old phones. They were fun to use (and play with), and I always loved the sound they made. I think there were a lot fewer wrong numbers with a rotary phone since you had to remove your finger to let the dial turn back to the beginning, instead of accidentally pushing a button twice.
Wow! I remember ALL of that! Great find! I'm jealous!!!
Great find of the rotary phone, Ohhh to the good ole days of uncomplication, did you have to teach your daughter how to dial (smile)> "bach then you didn't even have to count your minutes when using the phone!!! wow
i cant believe you blog... your so 21st century now!
I'm only 23 and I remember having a rotary phone at my grandmothers house. I used to get in trouble for playing with it. I miss those phones. I just decided I'm buying one!
: )
what a great find!
I remember those phones and I remember when phone number prefixes started with letters and not numbers. My old number was:
TORRY 33569 . . . so one would dial TO 33569. Those were the good ol' days :-)
Great find!
I remember fighting over the phone. We even had a phone stand, just for the phone!
Would you believe, I have the same phone? Mine isn't hooked up right now..You have to admit, you can hear very clear on this type of phone..
What a great phone. I would have jumped for joy if I found an old phone that I could actually use!
Hehe you made me nostalgic! I grew up in Ukraine and some people still have these phones (most upgraded, but some figure if their old phone still works why replace it).
these are hugely popluar and trendy in the uk and you will pay $120 for a re-make of one!
Wow--you summed up my memories of this kind of phone perfectly! Totally brought me back. Awesome post!
I so dislike cell phones !
There is no escaping to have a little down time anymore with those around.
On the other hand they can provide comfort and security and that's why I have one.
I hardly ever use it, but it is nice to have - for - just in case.
I LOVE the old phones so much better though and have several of them in my vintage and gift shop.
I am trying to get them hooked up in my house/shop which will be so cool ;)
I just joined your blog and will be pleased to see your other writings.
Organically Yours,
Diana
